Creating a Strategic Vision for Your Company: Why a Strategic Plan Must Start with Strategic Vision

  • Blog
Most business leaders understand that having a strategic plan is a must. It serves as a framework for enhancing organizational development and achieving higher levels of success. However, an effective strategic plan can’t be created out of thin air. Instead, it needs a point of focus, a concept to guide its creation and ensure everything aligns with a primary target. This core component represents your strategic vision, the singular ultimate goal that drives your company forward. Without a strategic vision, planning is often futile. The end result may be disjointed, unfocused, or overly cumbersome. But, once you identify your broader goal, crafting a strategic plan become simpler as you always have a guiding light to keep you on target. Strategy = Vision Understanding Strategic Vision “Vision” can be a somewhat ambiguous term, leading many leaders to struggle with what should and should not be considered part of their goals for the company. However, a strategic vision needs to be comprised of specific components if it is to be effective. First, the objective needs to be realistic. If the goal is not achievable, it will serve more as a source of frustration than anything else, particularly to those who are tasked with reaching an outcome that is essentially impossible based on your organization’s current position, available resources, industry, or any other factor. Second, your strategic vision must be credible. Typically, this means that other members of the leadership team and your employees need to see the objective as believable, meaningful, and relevant. When your goals align with that concept, motivation increases and everyone works in a common direction. Third, your objective needs to be attractive. It should serve as a source of inspiration, enticing employees and leaders to strive to make the goal you are envisioning a reality. Finally, your strategic vision needs to address the future, not the present. Once an objective is achieved, it no longer provides guidance regarding where the company is going. Instead, it’s a reflection of where it’s been, and that isn’t always motivating. Defining Your Strategic Vision and Plan Every organization is going to have a unique vision for the future. It’s a deeply personal part of a company’s identity, so your goals need to be based on what your business can achieve through right-action and proper planning. Once your objectives are defined, creating a strategic plan is a reasonably straightforward process. Simply examine your goals and identify key milestones between where you are today and where you want to be in the future. Break them down on a granular level and identify every critical step. Then, use those steps to craft a plan that can serve as a framework for bigger, better things. Ultimately, without a strategic vision, strategic planning is significantly harder to handle. But, once you understand your goals and the essential milestones that can make them a reality, crafting a practical guide is substantially easier to manage.
