Challenge

Cameron International Corporation (Cameron), a provider of flow equipment products and services to the global oil and gas industry, needed help standardizing its procedures. At the company’s Subsea division, project managers worked with customers, engineers, and manufacturers to design customized products and systems. Over time, different project managers developed different ways of working, and company executives made a decision to standardize project management procedures.

Opportunity

Cameron managers needed a technical writer with extensive knowledge of project management to write a detailed manual. Clarity Technical Communications provided a technical writer with Project Management Professional (PMP ®) certification.

Results

During the nine-month project, the consultant interviewed many subject matter experts (SMEs), including project managers, quality control experts, engineers, and health and safety specialists. The consultant worked closely with a supervisor, drafting and editing detailed procedures based on input from dozens of stakeholders. By the project’s end, the manual had been revised several times to incorporate suggestions from SMEs in a wide range of fields. Company executives were pleased with the project’s success, highlighting the open lines of communication between the consultant and Cameron employees.

Clarity enabled the company to:

  • Standardize its project management procedures.
  • Get input and buy-in from many diverse stakeholders.
  • Open up lines of communication between employees.
